Kwanghee reveals how he captured girls’ hearts

ZE:A’s Kwanghee confessed that back in the day, he used specialized tools to brush his teeth in order to impress his female classmates.

During the April 21st broadcast of KBS 2TV’s “Happy Together 3“, Kwanghee started off, “To capture the hearts of my female classmates,I carried around an animal character toothbrush and toothpaste.”

He recalled, “When I carried around a toothbrush and toothpaste, the girl students would gush, ‘Oh my gosh, he’s so cute’ and saw me as cute guy. They also noted to each other, ‘He’s mine’.”
He continued, “After I brushed my teeth, to look like a baby, I purposely walked around with a little milk mustache. Then the girls just went crazy over how cute I was” - causing the whole studio to burst out in a wave of laughter. Kwanghee stated that after he displayed this kind of appearance, girl students would leave many different kinds of milk on his desk.

Before-surgery Kwanghee performing with Seo Inyoung "Noona, you're not looking at me"
Variety-dol Kwanghee revealed his photo of his performance with Seo Inyoung before his plastic surgery.

On the March 31st, during Mnet's "Beatles Code" broadcast, Kwanghee revealed his before-surgery photo of the time when he became a dance partner for Seo Inyoung from the same company.

Honest about his surgery Kwanghee has been garnering a lot of attention because of the before/after photos uploaded online.

Kwanghee recalled, causing a great laugh: "I didn't look good before the surgery. I didn't resemble myself. That one time I danced with Seo Inyoung senior during "Super Star" as her partner, she didn't look at me once."

The members revealed: "Just like now, before getting the spotlight too, Kwanghee has been always jealous when any of the other, handome members were to go for some drama or CF meetings. He was getting angry and cried all night. So the other members used to comfort Kwanghee all night, as a result not getting any sleep that night and going to the meeting."

As expected, Kwanghee confessed when he heard it: "When I was getting jealous, I sprinkled the handsome members' clothes with yoghurt."

Other members retorted with: "Thank goodness. Please, let Kwanghee's popularity continue!".

ZE:A’s Kwanghee cheers on his members from the sidelines

While the ZE:A members participated in an epic dance battle, injured Kwanghee cheered for his members on the sidelines.

On March 25th, INFINITE, Dalmatian, and ZE:A had a special spring dance battle on KBS’s “Music Bank“. ZE:A separated themselves from the other two groups by performing while wearing masks and eye bands.

Unlike conventional dance battles, ZE:A went on stage covering their eyes, giving a fresh performance while emphasizing their perfect teamwork and synchronization.

Meanwhile, Kwanghee, who had an injured ankle and couldn’t participate in the battle, cheered on his members with the fans from the audience.

Kwanghee stated, “For this dance battle, we turned off all the lights during early mornings and practiced while we couldn’t see anything. It was a stage where we could show off our perfect teamwork but I was very disappointed and am sorry to our members for not being able to perform with them. Therefore, I turned into the head supporter without the members knowing.

ZE:A is currently promoting their title song “Here I Am” from their album “LOVABILITY” and will perform on “Music Core” and “Inkigayo” this week.

ZE:A’s Kwanghee prefers variety shows over music

Though his schedule is swamped with ZE:A’s promotions for ”Here I Am“, member Kwanghee took the time to sit down for an interview with ‘MAXIM‘ magazine.

The idol made a shocking confession during his interview, in which he stated, “If I was asked to choose between music and variety shows, I’d choose variety shows. I’m sure many would criticize me for being a singer and choosing variety shows over my profession, but I love talking on TV.”
When asked whether he’s received more parts in ZE:A’s new song, he replied, “Out of four refrains, I stand in the center twice. Thanks to the care of the members, my agency, and the love of the public, I’m able to stand in the center now.”

Check out the full interview in the April edition of " MAXIM.”

ZE-A Kwang Hee Doesn't Know How to Use Smart Phone

Variety-dol Kwanghee doesn't know how to use smart phone, embarrassing mistake during live broadcast.

ZE:A's Kwanghee has been crowned as "slow adopter".

ZE:A, which released their first full album on March 17th, appeared on music portal Bug's "Live broadcast with Star", showing off their witty replies.

That day Kwanghee, Siwan, Heechul, Junyoung and Dongjun introduced their album, called their fans on the phone and chatted with them.

During the "phone date' with fan, it turned out that Kwanghee doesn't know how to use a smart phone, as he switched it off accidentally, causing great laughter.

It's well known that ZE:A doesn't own mobile phones ever since before the debut. It allows them to focus more on practicing with the team. Kwanghee said brightly during interview: "I don't have a phone, so I save my sunbaenim's numbers on my iPad."

Kwang Hee Rising Star Interview

ZE:A's Hwang Kwanghee turns out to be a 'vegetarian man' who dislikes alcohol, cigarettes and coffee.

QUOTE
Appearing like a shooting star and snagging fixed casting in various variety programs immediately, ZE:A's Hwang Kwanghee! Unprecedented in the history of idols, 'plastic surgery-dol' Hwang Kwanghee filled the 'Trend Interview' with his merry laughter and his witty way of speaking.

✔ Recently, you've made it big as a variety-dol. What are your thoughts?
Thank you very much for saying so. Recently a TV was installed in the dormitory, and when I turn it on, I (see myself) coming on variety programs. I don't have time to monitor every one of them, but I do see nice messages coming up (on the Internet) frequently. Even though I'm busy and tired, the screams (that he makes) are happy ones.

✔ You have suffered humiliation as (being mistaken as) 'Frog Children', how is it these days?
Recently, I was filming a cameo in the drama 'Homicide'. When I got to the filming location, the director called for me and said to me "Hey, are you (from) 'Dawn of the Empire'? I directed 'Dawn of the Empire'." (Laugh) Even so, please look us up more than before. [T/N: Children of Empire = 제국의 아이들, Dawn of the Empire = 제국의 아침 (historical drama)]

✔ You did a special stage within Jewelry on Valentines' Day, did you receive any chocolate (in return)?
From Jewelry? To us? Of course they didn't give it to us! We did it as it was a 'win-win' situation being from the same company. Practice (for the special stage) only took us 30 minutes over 2 days.

✔ At the mention of 'Hwang Kwanghee', people will think of old pictures.
I went to Strong Hear with my old pictures without letting my company know, as I thought that I had to show a picture that would definitely make people laugh. It was a pity that the shocking pictures that were revealed after that did not see the light [T/N: get broadcasted]. And when my old materials come out, honestly speaking, I'm embarrassed and my limbs do curl up (upon seeing them). Rather, I have the confidence to reveal them but the topics that come up (after the revelation) are not what I want, and they are embarrassing.

✔ You seem to have started Twitter later than other idols your age.
When I meet my celebrity friends in the waiting room and they've started using Twitter, they ask me "Isn't it time to start that now?" In my opinion, it is not as interesting when you start using Twitter too early. The reason why I have not uploaded the pictures that I take with my celebrity friends in our spare time during filming is because it's tiring to ask (the other party's) company whether we can upload it or not. I usually upload pictures with actors/actresses, not so much with singers. In future, if I see an opportunity, I think I will explode with pictures.

✔ Is it not inconvenient to not own a handphone?
It is inconvenient, but rather, if I own one, I will be very busy. I'd like to buy one when we can afford it, but in fact, when the company gave the other members handphones in 2010, they did not want to accept it. I wanted to accept it then. (Laughs) If I receive a handphone in future, I'll ask for the latest model from the boss. I'm not kidding about pestering him, I surpass Inyoung noona's skills (of Jewelry) (in pestering people to buy them things). And the biggest problem is that it'll be crazy for the idol friends that I'm close with.

✔ Is your character as distinctive as it is during variety programs?
Honestly, due to my frivalous image, everyone may not know, but I cannot drink or smoke. I have never held a cigarette before, neither do I drink when offered during a meal. Instead of drinking coffee, I drink green tea or juice instead. I get nervous when I show off the juice in my tumbler. (Laughs) It's a problem that I like instant food such as pizza, cookies and bread. Amongst our members, Junyoung and Dongjun's tastebuds are very traditional [T/N: That they have to eat Korean food]. If there is no stew, they won't eat. How convenient is that for their wives? They just have to make stew and (their husbands) will eat well. (Laughs) And this may be surprising, but I am of the Christian faith and I pray every night. If I can't attend Sunday service, I will just go into any church and pray, then come out. It's a little surprising, right?

✔ When was your last girlfriend?
There is never an instance that (a girl and I) went out with me liking her first. Until now, it has always been me going out with the girls I like. [T/N: Simply put, he goes out with girls who like him first/more.] My last dating experience was at 20 years old, with someone of the same age. Instead of me being an "oppa" (an older male) or a "dongsaeng" (a younger male), I like it better when we are of the same age and can quarrel comfortably. It does not match (my character) if I fell in love crazily like in a movie, or had a sad pitiful story. In future, if I get a girlfriend, I will do everything she asks of me. I have to marry a girl whom I like.

✔ Is there a point that you don't like after being known?
It was really good that I went out and did random things before I became known. Even if it's just in Samcheong-dong, I go around thinking that there's always a camera waiting to take pictures of me. I like going to famous restaurants, so I go to those which are the talk of the town. I do not believe that all the restaurants that appear on the Internet are good ones.

✔ Your thoughts on completing your first official fanmeeting?
Just thinking of having so many fans come look for us, and love us, makes me my heart feel full. And it was really hard for Kevin hyung when he came to Korea, but he was so calm when we held a birthday party for him during the fanmeeting. My heart hurts thinking of how hard was it for him to adapt to being alone. I also thought finally, ZE:A has started.

✔ How is your relationship with the ZE:A members?
We are united. When we finish recording our individual variety programs, we tell (the PDs) that "today, I did well, so in future, please invite 3 members onto the show! Please promise us!". We don't go separately when we go to the movies. If someone goes off, we quibble and ask why are they leaving without even telling the others. And if one or two of the members are hungry, if the rest don't move, they don't eat either. We think of each other as family.

✔ Will the members keep secrets to themselves?
I only tell one person. It's hard to keep to all to myself. But of course, you have to be careful which member you tell. (Laughs) It's very interesting to make fun of the members. I think it's interesting to make fun of me. If by chance (that person) gets sulky, it is only for a short while. If it's too much, (that person) just releases it all in the end.

✔ ZE:A's first full album has been announced, did your parts increase?
I don't get as much recognition in ZE:A. I have the same (number of parts) as before in the album. Our group has fixed (roles) so I have to look after my role well. Actually, I moved up 2 spots (in the group) so that is a good improvement. And now, ZE:A is not going to have the image of warriors. If you're looking forward to abs, I think you'll have to wait till summertime or so. It's already too late (to make abs) for this album. (Laughs) As a whole, the members' images are of a gentle, natural and lovable concept. A push towards the pastel(-colored) and refreshing side.

✔ Along with Lee Joon, you're competing for the title of the "Kkap Idol 2.0"?
I've became friends with Lee Joon, who's the same age as me, while doing variety shows. Joon doesn't have a mobile phone either, so we can't contact often, but we meet during the broadcasts a lot. Joon has an ability to pull "the kkap" in the variety shows, but he's usually pretty calm. He's good at what he's doing. I don't know if Joon thinks so too, but seems like his body is very well built. Lee Joon is a person who makes people think "It would be nice to have a friend like that" when they meet him. Thing I'm better at than Joon... my loud voice! (lLaughs) Thing I'm worse at than Joon... my body! He looks good, but his body is also great.

✔ We've heard you're actually close to Jokwon?
During the hard times as a rookie, Jokwon came to me first and said: "Kwanghee, let's be friends." He debuted one year before me, but he told me that this year will be busy. During last year's end of the year awards, he assured me: "Next year, you'll get all the awards". Now too, when I talk with Jokwon, singers or staff, who happen to be around, stare at us.

✔ Do you have any unexpected friends among celebrities?
I was friends with Secret Garden's Lee Jongsuk before debut, I'm also friends with Girls' Generation's Hyoyeon. I still keep contact with Lee Jongsuk, whom I met during the Smart Model Contest (also known as "banned video"). He saw my appearance on Strong Heart and called to tell me it was fun. Secret Garden turned out well so it's nice to watch it. To tell the truth, many idols auditioned for the role of "Sun". Our members, Junyoung and Kevin, auditioned too. They've been rehearsing the script for Secret Garden during the fan camp and I said "What is it? Secret Garden? Good luck." but I had no idea this drama would be such a hit.

✔ Do you still wear "couple pajamas" with Nichkhun?
Honestly, I don't know where it is. And I'm friends with Khun too.

✔ Do you have any rivals among idols? Is there someone giving you a hard time?
"I'm a rival to myself" sounds very formal, so I'm not going to say it. My rivals are all the "mainstream" idols. Lee Joon, Simon D, Kikwang, Yonghwa... I feel rivalry with Lizzy, Min and Sunhwa as well. But I don't think there's anyone who'd laugh openly at me or give me a hard time. Of course it's not uncomfortable, but I was friends with Min even before debut, but lately, when we meet, she asks me "Oppa, was your personality always like that?". Then I say: "What about you?". She's been such a good kid before.

✔ Your personal plans?
I don't know if I can emerge as an "acting-dol" around winter. Lately I've been recording some dramas, I was also offered a role in a sitcom. Seems like I will appear in it this spring. If, by any chance, I become the main hero, I will try to give my best.

✔ Speed Interview: "Hwang Kwanghee's..."

ZE-A's Kwang Hee "CrimE Squad" 's Cameo

ZE:A Kwanghee, 'Crime Squad''s cameo "The actors made me get goosebumps"

ZE:A's 'Plastic surgery-dol' Kwanghee kept being on the head by Song Ilgook.

KBS 2TV 'Crime Squad''s three main actors Song Ilgook, Song Jihyo and Lee Jonghyuk were appearing in KBS 2TV 'Yeoyoumanman' that was broadcasted on the 4th.

ZE:A's Kwanghee made a cameo in 'Crime Squad'. Kwanghee was playing the role of an idol being brought to the police station and was hit on the head by Song Ilgook.

Kwanghee who challenging acting stated "I saw the actors for the first time and I got goosebumps. At first they were laughing and chatting but then they suddenly became someone else even when it's only the rehearsal. They litterally enter into the character"

He added "Because I was still lacking on that point I kept on laughing. I learnt it". Kwanghee who was already Song Ilgook's fan even took a souvenir selca with Song Ilgook.

The selca mentionned:

Kwang Hee's Interview for Sports Seoul

"Plastic-dol" ZE:A's Kwanghee - also a variety-dol and an acting-dol!

'I think that I look much better in person than on screen. (The plastic surgery) looks very natural' - that's how he greeted us. He burst into laughing, saying: 'Lately, I often hear these words. Ha ha. Because I'm so funny on TV, when people see me in person, seems like they think that I look relatively good. I'm a bit sad about that "natural talk". Now a little less than before, but... if I hadn't told the truth about the plastic surgery, I would have regretted.'

Hwang Kwanghee, member of 9-member boyband 'Children of Empire' (ZE:A). There's no other entertainer who'd emerged in such scary way. For confessing the truth - not only as a boyband member, but also as a man - about the plastic surgery in a cool way he received a nickname "plastic-dol". He was stated as the best "variety-dol" of 2011 too. He's also eager to take on acting - he'll be making a cameo in KBS2 Mon-Tues drama "Crime squad" next month, on the 7th.

His voice, one octave higher than ordinary man's. His skill of talking honestly and cheerfully. Friendly and open-minded Kwanghee is screaming of joy because of the flood of interviews. He was able to come to this place for various reasons. But more than anything, the role of his frank confession of plastic surgery on variety shows is hard to deny.

* 'Plastic-dol' Kwanghee *

- What's the reason for confessing your plastic surgery on variety shows?

I was often losing in games on variety shows. For example, as a rookie I'd receive such penalties as piercing a plastic wrap with my face or dribbling a soccer ball on my forehead... It would be uncomfortable (due to surgery) if I received a punishment like that... It was frustrating. My personality is very optimistic and honest so it's not something that would bother me, but it would be very hard to hide at the broadcast. So I said to the agency "I would rather talk about it coolly". Plastic surgery confession was a hot issue, but I didn't know I would receive so much spotlight.

- An opportunity to get plastic surgery?

I haven't often heard that I'm not good-looking when I was a kid. But since I decided to become an entertainer in high school, I was honestly considering getting a plastic surgery. Before the surgery, I didn't like my hooked nose nor my forehead, which was slightly off. I thought that it would be great if I didn't get any complains about my looks after I become an entertainer. This way I would be less worried and everything would be fine.

- When did you get plastic surgery?

- In 3rd grade of high school I became a trainee at Star Empire entertainment agency after I auditioned during the winter break. Moon Junyoung, Kevin and Taehun were there with me but I was the one who was the least handsome. After being a trainee for one year, I went to Star Empire by myself. I hid the fact that I was going to get the plastic surgery and told our president that I was going to rest for a bit instead. Honestly, I was worried about one more thing, aside from plastic surgery. I knew that would be the end if I went back to the agency as a trainee. I thought I wouldn't become an entertainer. Jewelry's Kim Eunjung has been always saying "It will be even harder when you debut" but I never listened. My head was full of worries - can I become a singer? How can I do it?
I got the plastic surgery in spring, when I was 21 years old.

- You said you got it a few times, in several places?

Because I was a little selfish, I got surgery on my nose (four times), forehead and double-eyelid surgery. First in the hospital in Ilsan, then in Kangnam. My parents paid for everything and said "You'll pay it back later. There's nothing free in this world". After the surgery, I've been sending the money I earned regularly onto their bank account. I remember that I've already paid the full cost of the surgeries...

- You're not afraid of surgeries. Are you planning on getting more in the future?

Because I was anticipating my new nose so much, whenever I got a surgery, I didn't think about how painful it was. It was fun seeing my new faces. After one year I decided that I shouldn't touch anything more. I'm just slightly (laughter) sad it turned out so well (t/n: so he couldn't get another surgery).
Even if I'm not best (good-looking) in ZE:A, I'm satisfied with my face. Of course, it's the best if you look natural. But how awesome would it be if I could re-touch a little bit more...
I think that Siwan is the most handsome in ZE:A.

- Your parents didn't oppose the plastic surgery?

At first they opposed pretty strongly, they told me to give up. But. I already decided to become a celebrity and my looks were constantly on my mind. The result? My parents agreed and said: "We'll respect your decision. We don't want you to blame us for not becoming a celebrity. Instead, become the best one."

- Your parents seem to be quite unusual.

To be honest, my parents are more scary than Star Empire's president, Shin Joohak. Because whatever they would give me, they'd be very strict about it.
During the school days, I lied a lot. During trainee days, I was often late. Every time my parents, rather than punish me severely, said: "We don't know if we have to repeat it a hundred times. You'll regret it later. You don't know what you lose when you're late."
They didn't force me to study too. I could act freely as long as I took responsibility for my actions.
Once in high school, I wanted to buy new shoes, so I told them I will work part time.
They told me: "Sure, try. You must know how to earn money to spend it." And they always say: "Greet properly. Quit being so vain. You should experience everything yourself."

- What do you think, to what extend does the appearance matter?

I think that it matters quite a lot, more in terms of confidence. Among the idols, there are these confident about their singing, dancing or looks, but... There's a lot of situations in which visuals are the first priority. To some degree, if there are looks provided, there will be more activities (t/n: for the celebrities).

- If by any chance, your kids tell you they want to become celebrities and get a plastic surgery...?

Hmm. I will oppose immediately. But then, if they don't give up, there will be nothing I can do about it.

- What do you want to say to those aspiring celebrities who are thinking of getting a plastic surgery?

I want to say that if you want to get a plastic surgery, you have to take full responsibility for it. Your character, reason (for the surgery) and beliefs all matter. I'd also like to tell you that because I'm the 'original" plastic-dol, that this 'character' can't be used anymore.

* 'Variety-dol Kwanghee'

- You were successful in letting everybody know of your existence by plastic surgery confession. But the question of "what's next?" seems to be a problem. Is there any secret of surviving in this entertainment world, full of professionals?

I'm a little embarrassed to say it myself, but I'm sincere and I was born unpretentiously sociable. I always try to brighten up the atmosphere with my cheerful laugh and excited voice. I like to offer things to my sunbaenims. Kim Wonhee sunbaenim likes chocolates, Jo Hyerim sunbaenim - grape juice, and Kim Jisun sunbaenim especially likes orange juice. One time, during MBC "Quiz to change the world" recording, I asked manager hyung a favor to bring a mean for Sun Woo Yong Nyeo sunbaenim, who was hungry." Because of that, sunbaenims treat me well. Kim Jisun sunbaenim bought me a thermos when he saw I drink from paper cups. Kim Na Woon sunbaenim often sends me kuksu because she knows I like it.

- Because of your similar characters, you're often compared to 2AM's Jo Kwon.

I'm not sure. I agree that we both have explosively vigorous characters, but if I were to go the same path as Jo Kwon ssi, there would be differences in the way we act and talk. A lot of people think that because of our similar characters we wouldn't be close to each other, but it's not like that. Jo Kwon ssi is one year younger than me, I'm his hyung. Last year, at the MBC end of the year awards, Jo Kwon ssi told me "Next year you'll be a lot more busy. And you'll get an award."
I was so grateful...

- There are a lot of people you're thankful to, but is there someone you especially look up to?

I'm really thanful to (Kang) HoDong hyung for the year 2010. He told me warmly: "You. I will raise you for sure.". He cheered on me and treated me well when I worked hard. I'm also thankful to ZE:A members. There are a lot more talented members than me, but because I was given the chance first, they let me. They're not jealous and give me a lot of advices.

- We've heard you're always thoroughly prepared.

I leave memos of the stories (items) I can use on variety shows on my iPad. In my spare time I read books and arrange my schedule. I'm especially worried of what to say during interviews. If I do the interview well, people will talk about me. I think that if (the work) piles up, it will show.

*"Acting-dol Kwanghee" and Children of Empire

- Not so long time ago you shot a cameo in "Crime squad", what are your feelings about the first acting experience?

I will appear for about 10 minutes in the first episode. I play the role of a famous idol star and I will have a talking scene with Song Ilgook sunbae. During the recording, I realized "Being an actor and being a star is really different!". I didn't believe that actors are like chameleons but I changed my mind when I saw Song Ilgook sunbae. When the camera was off, he talked with me like a hyung, but he changed 180 degrees when the camera was on. Because I was a singer and a beginner who was supposed to make a cameo, he took everything into his consideration so I could act a little more comfortably.

- This year ZE:A will focus not only on Korea, but also Japan. Can Kwanghee become a "variety-dol" in Japan too?

Because my Japanese skills are still bad, I can't talk too much. But I'm planning to win as an honest idol. I think my unique tone of voice will also appeal to them. Occasionally there will be people who think that's only for show, but that's not it. My mother has been saying to me since I was young "Your pronunciation is lousy, so always talk loudly, wherever you go" and I became like that.

- Your plans for this year as a ZE:A member.

I want to hear that I'm different on stage. I'm taking vocal and dance lessons in order to show you a complete change from my variety image, so please anticipate. Our full album will be released in the middle of March.
